Don’t  miss the new Cornish Poldark 8-part series, starting BBC One 8 March.

It’s filmed in Charlestown Harbour, the nextdoor harbour to Pentewan, as well as Poldark, Levant and Wheal Mines, Lands End, the Lizard, and Constantine Bay near Padstow.  I saw some ship battles filmed out to sea last summer.

It’s the late 1700s.  Ross Poldark’s come back from fighting in the American War of Independence. His family and friends thought he was dead. He returns to Cornwall to find the woman he’d hoped to marry now engaged to his cousin. His property, inherited from his dead father, is derelict.

It’s a time when fishermen are not catching much fish, tin and copper mines are closing down because prices are too low, but the price of food and rents are high. Ross is faced with making his land productive, caring for his tenants and trying to win back his woman.
